Located in the heart of Coachella Valley, Palm Desert has long been a destination to reflect and reconnect, the perfect getaway to discover and enjoy as you please. From scenic places to smiling faces, Palm Desert’s unique rhythm has been represented a number of ways over the years, but has yet to be truly heard… until now. Inspired by this truth, the city set out to translate native plants into music by partnering with plant sonfication expert Joe Patitucci of PlantWave and indie musician/artist Windser. At the intersection of art and science, here is the true rhythm of the desert.

Translating Native Plants into a Rhythm

Created in 2019, PlantWave is designed to amplify our relationship with the Earth by “tuning into nature” through sonification technology. Using plant biodata, the PlantWave device charts electrical changes in plant conductivity through electrodes placed on the leaves and converts them into audio. In partnership with Joe Patitucci, founder and CEO of PlantWave, we ventured through Palm Desert to sample native plants and translate them into a robust library of true desert rhythms. From the California fan palm to the blue palo verde, this range of sampled flora captured the breadth of happy paces found only here.

From the Plants to Your Ears: Finding Inspiration in Palm Desert

Named Amazon Music’s “Breakthrough Artist to Watch” (2023), Windser’s music is characterized by a blend of indie rock tenderness and compelling songwriting, a style that has resonated with audiences throughout the country. His work stands out for its emotional depth, rooted in personal experiences and a deep connection to his Californian origins. After spending the weekend with us in Palm Desert, Windser found inspiration in the city’s warm glow and welcoming atmosphere. “When I got here, I felt a stillness and calm just by escaping the city and being somewhere beautiful,” said Windser. Combining his rich melodies with the true rhythms of Palm Desert’s native plants, it’s a feeling he captured effortlessly in his interpretation: Desert Song.
