Tour: Civic Center Park
Art Description:
"The Dreamer" takes advantage of the peaceful Civic Center Park. The partially submerged bronze dreamer causes viewers to wonder how long it has been there and if the rest can be unearthed. The weathered and crackled figure is nearly 14 feet long and 4 feet high.

About the artist:
David Phelps grew up near Stockton, California, and was heavily influenced by the cycle of drought and floods and the scarcity and abundance on the farm. His work draws from the memory of these visual and emotional extremes. Such influences are seen in the parched, cracked surfaces of his pieces and in the way that he infuses his figures with a sense of perseverance, optimism, and humor. Phelps' figures are unique for their size and in the way they engage the space around them. Partially submerged, his sculptures challenge the viewer to complete the figure in his/her own imagination. He perfected a process for casting gypsum cement, a material that yields a cracked, mud-like surface. Visit David Phelp's Website
