Palm Desert Named One Of America's Best Vacation Towns

04/22/09

A newly published guidebook has named Palm Desert one of the nation’s top 100 vacation towns.

The book, The Great Towns of America by David and Joan Vokac, profiles Palm Desert and 99 other communities across the United States, where the “comforts and artistry of civilization blend easily with nearby natural grandeur.”

Subtitled the “All New Guide to the 100 Best Getaways for a Vacation or a Lifetime,” the guidebook profiles communities from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Cambria, California, that have been found to be the nation’s most desirable destinations for travel and for full-time living.

The Great Towns of America is a revised follow up to the authors’ 1998 book of the same name, which also featured Palm Desert. A dozen towns that were profiled in the original book have been replaced by new locales, but Palm Desert has retained its place in the new title and garnered praise from the authors as “California’s preeminent desert showplace.”

David Vokac, a former urban planner and the author of ten earlier guidebooks, and his wife Joan, also a former planner, spent two years and logged 80,000 miles traveling the United States to evaluate the best towns from among 221 semi-finalist communities. The resulting 624-page guidebook includes descriptions of prime attractions, restaurants, and lodging in each of the 100 featured towns, as well as monthly weather ratings and information about each community’s livability and affordability.

The Great Towns of America is available for purchase at the Palm Desert Visitor Center for the cover price of $23.95. Complimentary details about profiled towns are available at the authors’ website – www.greattowns.com. For more information about purchasing the book or Palm Desert, please call 760-568-1441.
