Virginia Waring Piano Competition 2009

03/31/09

One of the world’s major piano events comes to Palm Desert this year with the return of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition.

A select group of 25 contestants were accepted from a field of 80 applicants for the 2009 Competition, which continues through Sunday, April 5, at the Palm Desert campus of Cal State San Bernardino and the McCallum Theatre.

Held every two years, the Competition recognizes and nurtures the careers of gifted pianists from around the globe and is viewed as an important springboard for the future stars of solo, chamber, and orchestral piano. This year’s contestants, ages 18 to 35, represent more than a dozen different countries.

New this year, the event features a chamber music round that will allow semi-final contestants to play a piano quintet with the Del Sol String Quartet while competing for the Chamber Music Performance Prize. The competition will also award the Ernst Krenek Solo Performance Prize, named for noted composer and longtime Coachella Valley resident Ernst Krenek.

The McCallum Theatre will host the Concerto Finals with Orchestra on Sunday, April 5, with Maestro John A. Roscigno conducting the Waring Festival Orchestra.

All events with the exception of the finals are free and open to the public on a first-come basis. Tickets to finals on Friday, April 3, and on Sunday, April 5, range from $10 to $35. For more information, please visit www.vwipc.com or call 773-2575.
