A "Tree" mendous Celebration

03/31/09

Be part of a growing tradition as Palm Desert celebrates Arbor Day throughout this month with a series of fun-filled, educational events and activities designed to inspire people of all ages with a love of trees and everything green.

The excitement kicks off at noon on Sunday, April 5, at the Palm Desert Visitor Center with the return of the Desert Horticultural Society’s annual Spring Garden Tour. The free, self-guided tour showcases picturesque gardens in Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage with docents standing by to answer questions. During the four-hour event, the Visitor Center will host expert presentations on proper care of desert gardens and how to start desert plants from seeds and cuttings. Additional details are available at www.deserthorticulturalsociety.org or by calling the Visitor Center at 568-1441.

The festivities continue on Saturday, April 11, with the City of Palm Desert’s Arbor Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Civic Center Park immediately following Family YMCA of the Desert’s Easter Egg Hunt. Bring a picnic and join in the fun, which includes a free seedling giveaway, a raffle for tree and garden-themed prizes, and live music from the Tree HugRs. Aspiring green thumbs can attend a pruning demonstration showcasing techniques to help trees grow properly. Attendees will also learn about composting, water wise gardening, and tree varieties that will flourish in the desert. The College of the Desert’s Horticulture Department also will be offering tours of its student gardens.

On Saturday, April 25, the month-long celebration concludes with the Living Desert’s “Party for the Planet” in honor of Earth Day. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Living Desert visitors will enjoy reduced admission prices while getting back to nature with plant giveaways, children’s activities, live entertainment, and the zoo’s many fascinating animals. Exhibitors will be on hand to share their expertise about desert life, preservation, and conservation. For more information about the Party for the Planet, please call 346-5694, ext. 2000 or visit www.livingdesert.org.
