City Welcomes New Farmers’ Market
02/26/09
The recent opening of Palm Desert’s first weekly, Certified Farmers’ Market means that Palm Desert residents and visitors now have an exciting new place to find fresh, regionally grown fruits and vegetables.
Located at Entrada del Paseo in the 72-500 block of Highway 111, the Farmers’ Market is open every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until June. Approved by the Palm Desert City Council and operated by the nonprofit Palm Springs Cultural Center, the Certified Farmers’ Market is a gathering place where farmers can offer fresh produce and related agricultural products directly to the public.
The market’s farmers are regionally-based, most within 100 miles of the Coachella Valley, and offer a wide variety of items including fresh vegetables and fruit (no spray and organic); exotic plants and cut flowers; honey; eggs; nuts; fresh-baked artisan breads; cheese; herbs and lavender; and California olive oil.
The new Certified Farmers’ Market in Palm Desert joins similar farmers’ markets in Palm Springs and La Quinta. All three are certified by the California Department of Agriculture.
Entrada del Paseo is located at the west end of El Paseo and Highway 111. In addition to the Farmers’ Market, the complex is home to the Palm Desert Visitor Center, two upscale restaurants, the recently expanded Eric Johnson Memorial Gardens, and the new Henderson Community Building, which houses the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce. For more information, please call the Palm Desert Visitor Center at 568-1441 or the Palm Springs Cultural Center at 322-3521.
