New Exhibition Takes Visitors “In Different Places”

01/29/09

Two artists explore foreign cultures and traditions in a new exhibition debuting this month at the Palm Desert Community Gallery. “In Different Places” features photographs by Dimitry Kirillov and three dimensional objects by Suzanne Ross. The exhibition will be on display from Thursday, February 5, through April 5. The public is invited to a free opening reception for the artists at the Gallery on Monday, February 9, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Dimitry Kirillov’s portion of the exhibition is subtitled “Russian Photographs 1965 - 1975.” The photographs feature black and white images of people in St. Petersburg, Russia, the famous city (then known as Leningrad) where the photographer was born and educated. Kirillov left his former home in 1979 for California where he explored his two lifelong occupations – physics and photography. He moved to Joshua Tree in 2000 to live near the National Park and dedicate more time to his art.

A native of New York State, Suzanne Ross now lives in Twentynine Palms. Ross’s portion of the exhibition, subtitled “Burka, Series 4,” explores the Burka – a traditional Muslim garment. The pieces include unique handmade paper that Ross creates using paper pulp that is beaten and mixed with nails, ash, and dyes and then put through a water vacuum process. The paper is then placed over forms or mannequins to give it a three-dimensional shape.

Together, the work of the two artists will transport the viewer to different times, places, and cultures.

The Palm Desert Community Gallery is located in the Palm Desert Visitor Center, 72-567 Highway 111, and is open daily from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information, please call 568-5240.
