Discover inspiring and thought-provoking cinema at the 2018 Palm Desert Public Art Documentary Film Series. The public is invited to the tenth season of free screenings of art-themed documentaries presented by the City’s Public Art Department and the University of California, Riverside Palm Desert Graduate Center. Each screening will include either a featured speaker who will discuss that night’s film or a special presentation, along with plenty of special tenth anniversary treats and surprises. This week's featured film is Brillo Box (3 Cents Off). In 1969, Lisanne Skyler’s parents bought an Andy Warhol Brillo Box (3¢ Off) sculpture for $1,000. An exact replica of a shipping carton for Brillo soap pads, Warhol’s Brillo Boxes were at first dismissed by the art world. But 40 years later, with Warhol’s reputation as a contemporary-art visionary long secured, the same piece sold for more than $3 million at a record-breaking Christie’s auction. Blending a humorous family narrative with Pop Art history, Brillo Box (3 Cents Off) explores the ephemeral nature of art and value, and the decisions that shape a family’s history. The film will be followed by a Q&A with Mara Gladstone, Associate Curator at the Palm Springs Art Museum and followed by a hands on art activity hosted by the Palm Springs Art Museum. All the film screenings are scheduled on Thursdays at 6pm in the auditorium at UCR Palm Desert, 75080 Frank Sinatra Drive. Film screenings are free, but reservations are recommended.
